“Amazing” : Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Transitioning from Royalty to Hollywood’s Spotlight
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, once the golden couple of the British Royal Family, have found themselves at the center of Hollywood’s comedic spotlight. Since stepping down as senior working royals in 2020, the couple has been on a mission to rebrand themselves as Hollywood power players. However, their efforts have often been met with ridicule and mockery from some of the most renowned comedians in the industry.
It’s been just over four years since Harry and Meghan handed back their HRH titles to the monarchy. Despite initial plans to retain the use of Frogmore Cottage and visit the UK regularly, the couple’s focus has shifted to Hollywood, where they are attempting to establish themselves in the entertainment industry
Royal expert Kinsey Schofield has noted that Meghan and Harry’s transition from royal highnesses to Hollywood hopefuls has been anything but smooth. They have been humbled by Hollywood on several occasions, with their actions and statements providing ample material for comedians.
One such instance wasHarry’s comments in his memoir, Spare, where he humorously wrote about applying Elizabeth Arden cream to his “hangdown,” a term he used to describe his genitalia, and how it reminded him of his mother, Princess Diana.
This led to talk show host Jimmy Kimmel dedicating multiple segments of ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ to poke fun at Harry’s remarks, even joking about a fake children’s book titled ‘The Prince and the Penis.’
Saturday Night Live, known for its satirical take on current events, also took swipes at the couple. In one episode, comedians Martin Short and Steve Martin joked that “similar to Harry and Meghan, no-one is rooting for us but you’ll tune in anyway.”
Another sketch featured Meghan’s character in a Suits parody spin-off struggling to balance her legal career while caring for an unemployed immigrant, with Prince Harry’s image flashing across the screen.
Comedian Joe Koy also joined in, slamming the couple during his Golden Globes speech, joking that “it turns out that Harry and Meghan were still getting paid millions of dollars for doing absolutely nothing – and that’s just by Netflix.”
Comedians Trevor Noah and Chris Rock took a turn with the Sussexes. The first compared Harry to the host James Cordon, saying that anyone can move from London to Los Angeles without revealing his most embarrassing secrets. Rock, for his part, mocked the couple by recalling how they always want to appear like the victims, even when they aren’t.
Even South Park and Family Guy got in on the action, with South Park depicting Harry and Meghan on a talk show demanding privacy, and Family Guy showing Harry receiving millions from Netflix for no apparent reason.
Despite their efforts to rebrand themselves, Meghan and Harry have found that Hollywood’s comedic community has not been as welcoming as they had hoped. Their journey from royal highnesses to Hollywood’s punchline serves as a cautionary tale of the challenges of rebranding in the entertainment industry.
