Xavier Worthy’s big NFL debut was almost forgotten as Chiefs survive the Ravens to open the season

It seemed like a done deal for a moment, but the Kansas City Chiefs got a scare, as the Baltimore Ravens came very close at the end but that was it. The defending Super Bowl Champions start the season with a win after beating the Lamar Jackson and company 27-20.

The Ravens started off on the right path with a first quarter touchdown on a 5 -yard touchdown run by Derrick Henry, but the Chiefs answered back fast after Patrick Mahomes found rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy after some interesting play-calling that had him running the ball. It was a 21-yard sprint to the endzone for his first touchdown of the game.

In the second quarter three field goals were made, two by Harrison Butker and one by Justin Tucker to put the score 13-10 at the half; Tucker missed a long field goal earlier in the game.

More points and a tense second half

To start the second half, the Chiefs defense started to dominate as they held the Ravens off and Isiah Pacheco helped the scoring cause for the home team with a 1-yard touchdown run to reach a 10-point lead.

But in the fourth quarter the points did not stop. The Ravens certainly made it interesting after a Lamar Jackson 7-yard pass to Isaiah Likely to stay within three but it was Mahomes to Worthy once more on a 35-yard touchdown pass to put the score 27-17.

The Ravens came so close. After a field goal and a stop on defense, Jackson found Likely in the back of the endzone for the final play of the game, but his toe was just outside touching the white chalk and the Chiefs held on.

Patrick Mahomes was 20-28 threw the air for 291 yards, a touchdown and an interception, Isiah Pacheco rushed for 45 yards on 15 carries and Xavier Worthy scored twice.

For the Ravens, Lamar Jackson was 26-41 for 273 yards and a touchdown and he also rushed 16 times for 122 yards. Derrick Henry rushed for 46 yards a touchdown in his debut as a member of Baltimore.
