The Kansas City Chiefs were already lucky enough to have found such a legendary player in the first place at tight end when they drafted Tony Gonzalez back in 1997. Who could have ever dreamed that when the Chiefs submitted Travis Kelce’s name in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft, he would someday eclipse Gonzalez’s career marks?

On Sunday, in a tough Week 4 battle against the Los Angeles Chargers, Kelce finally overtook Gonzalez on the Chiefs’ leaderboard for all-time receptions by a player.

Travis Kelce has officially taken the torch from Tony Gonzalez for the most career receptions for the Kansas City Chiefs.

FIrst, Kelce tied the mark on the opening drive for the Chiefs on this tremendous catch up the right sideline for a huge gain of 38 yards. It was an exciting moment for the Chiefs that unfortunately gave way to a Carson Steele fumble that would halt the drive.

From there, Kelce tied Gonzalez at 915 career receptions and needed only one more to pass him, which he did in the second quarter on a simple five-yard catch from Mahomes.

Kelce now has 916 career receptions and has established a new career mark for future generations to chase—whether at wideout or receiver.

For some perspective on just how rare both Gonzalez and Kelce have been historically for the Chiefs, you should know that the Chiefs don’t have anyone else who has even reached 550 career catches. Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is third on the list at 532. Meanwhile, Tyreek Hill is fourth with 479 followed by former Chiefs WR Henry Marshall to round out the top five.

Kelce has 917 catches for 11,440 receiving yards and 74 touchdowns in his career.
