Gauff: “I prefer to win another Grand Slam rather than reaching No. 1”

At just 21 years old, the American confesses from Miami why she finds it so difficult to play in this tournament and what things she is trying to change these days.

It’s rare to see a player of Coco Gauff’s caliber with an 8-4 record as we close out the third month of the 2025 season. It hasn’t been the best start for the American, still seeking her first final of the year and far from her best tennis level. We know that the Miami Open is not her strong suit either, the expectation of playing at home has made her collapse on several occasions, but at some point that big performance will have to come. After two good wins, the American is one step away from achieving her best result here, but first, we must hear her reflections after the victory over Maria Sakkari, an opponent she had already beaten a few days ago in Indian Wells.
“Today the goal was to go out there and have fun on the court, that was my intention 100%. That’s how I feel, that’s how I’m playing. I just wanted to see myself free out there; in the past, I’ve always struggled a bit with pressure here playing at home, but for a while now, I’ve been aware that only when I’m loose and relaxed is when I can display my best game. I think that’s what I was trying to emulate today.”

Forgetting the ‘bagel’ from the previous round
“I knew that today things wouldn’t go as well as in the previous match; it’s very rare to get two consecutive wins without dropping any games overall. Honestly, what I was trying to do is forget about it; I didn’t want to dwell on it too much since these results are just circumstances that one can encounter every couple of years. I was just trying to leave that anecdote in the past and focus fully on today’s match. I knew it would be harder just by the fact of knowing that you can’t get anything better than a 6-0, 6-0.”

One of them looked visibly emotional as Kim held his head and hand while he sat in a wheelchair in a military uniform. Other images showed Kim consoling families of the deceased and kneeling before a portrait of a fallen soldier to pay his respects, placing what appeared to be medals and flowers beside images of the dead. The North Korean leader also mentioned the "pain of waiting for one hundred and twenty days in which he had never forgotten the beloved sons even for a moment". In September, Kim appeared alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin at an elaborate military parade in Beijing. Kim did not respond to an offer from Donald Trump to meet during the US president's Asia trip in October.

Hassett, for his part, made the case at the WSJ CEO Council on Tuesday that he would be independent if chosen. He said the Fed chair’s role is to “do the right thing.” “Suppose that inflation has gotten from, say, 2.5 percent to 4 percent,” he said. “You can’t cut.” The tension between such comments and the fact that the Fed chair sweepstakes is ongoing underscores just how difficult Trump is making things for his future Fed chief. Delivering cuts next year might also be easier said than done.
