How 'hands-on' father Prince William will support Kate Middleton and their children - as Princess of Wales reveals cancer diagnosis after 'taking time to explain everything' to their young family

And following the news of her cancer diagnosis, Prince William is sure to be hands-on as ever in his duties as a father and husband.

The Prince of Wales, 41, and Kate Middleton, 42, have long been knowing for their commitment to their young family.

The pair are are doting parents – and as the mother-of-three revealed she is ‘getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help her heal in my mind, body and spirits’ – the future King is bound to be endlessly supportive.

Speaking from a bench surrounded by daffodils and spring blossom – in a video shared last night – Kate said: ‘It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok.

‘Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too.

‘As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both.’

In January – after news of the Princess’s surgery was made public – an insider claimed that William ‘won’t be fazed’ by parenting Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis while his wife recovers.

He is said to be a ‘hands-on’ father and is regularly seen dropping off and picking up his children at Lambrook School in Berkshire.

Speaking to HELLO!, an insider has claimed that the news of Kate’s surgery had ‘shocked’ the ‘close knit’ community of parents.

They said: ‘He is a regular at the school gate and events and he’s very hands-on as a dad, so being in charge while Kate is away won’t faze him.

‘They often do things as a full family unit and he’s very confident looking after the kids.’

On top of this, the source said the parents at Lambrook will ‘rally around [William] to offer any help they can’ in coming weeks.

William is also known to be an affectionate father who often cuddles and kisses his children, and speaks fondly of them at public engagements.

Last year, royal fans gushed after George joined his father at day four of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s, London.

The young royal, dressed in a smart blazer and check shirt, sat next to the Prince of Wales in the stands while watching England take on Australia during the cricket series.

Looking as equally smart, father-of-three William donned a light blue jacket and a pair of stylish FINLAY sunglasses while enjoying a day out with his eldest son.

The sports-loving duo appeared to be deeply concentrating on the action, with the British heir to the throne pointing out certain elements to George, who often seemed to pull very similar facial expressions to his father.

And the year prior, William was also praised as the picture of fatherly pride as he took his daughter Princess Charlotte to the Commonwealth Games.

He doted on his daughter as they took in the action at the swimming, hockey and gymnastics alongside Kate.

Charlotte was on her very best behaviour as she joined her parents for her first royal engagement without her brothers.

The little princess shook hands with dignitaries, smiled for photographs, and cheered on the athletes, all under the watchful eye of her parents.

When the long day out started to get to much, Charlotte began to get a little restless. But her doting father was on hand to reassure her with cuddles and small acts of affection, like tucking her hair behind her ears.

The sweet moments between father and daughter were noted by royal fans who praised their genuine bond.

Following the surgery announcement, it was confirmed that Prince William had postponed a number of engagements.

It was understood that William wants to continue doing the school run in an effort to create as much normality as he can for George, ten, Charlotte, eight, and five-year-old Prince Louis, while their mother was in hospital.

He will also have the help of their nanny, Maria, and Kate’s family, particularly her parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, who are hands-on grandparents well used to having the children for sleepovers or staying with them.

Kate’s parents and siblings Pippa Matthews and James Middleton are already rallying round and help support her recovery at her home in Windsor, which is close to their own homes.

Last month, William was also ‘still processing’ his father’s shock cancer diagnosis, royal insiders said, and claimed he ‘remains determined’ to keep putting his family first.

‘At times like this, it is a reminder that as well as being the future head of state, he is also a human being’, a royal source told The Times.

‘He is processing the news of his father having cancer as a human being. Given the seriousness with which he takes his role, of course it is something he will be thinking about.’

Meanwhile, William remains determined to prioritise his family, with royal aides saying he will not ‘deputise’ for the King, who is also supportive of his decision.

A source said: ‘The Prince has always made clear that his priority is to support his wife and family for the time being – and he did not put a timescale on that.’

And it is understood that William has his father’s ‘100 per cent’ backing in returning at his own pace as one insider revealed: ‘The King adores Catherine and thinks she is doing a wonderful job. He understands that family comes first.’

Earlier this year, a source also claimed that William and Kate are ‘like a normal mum and dad’ who throw themselves into events at their children’s school.

The couple are reported to be ‘hands-on’ parents who never miss an event at Lambrook.

Hello! magazine said the royal couple would take part in all the important school activities, including ‘queueing for the tombola’ in a recent fundraising drive.

The source claimed the future King and Queen tend to discreetly slip into events such as carol concerts and will almost always be in attendance, fitting occasions around their busy schedules.

‘The day after Kate’s carol service [at Westminster Abbey], it was the school Christmas fair and they were all there, as they were the previous year.

‘I saw them queueing up for tombola tickets like everyone else. They really act like a normal mum and dad,’ the source said.

They added that the royal couple attended the school’s carol service at Eton College Chapel and sat alongside the headmaster – while joining in with all the songs.

Royal fans have previously commented on the couple’s ‘relatable’ style of parenting after spotting Kate and William out in public.

Parenting experts have also in past called the Prince and Princess of Wales ‘calm and natural’ with their children, following Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s behaviour at the Queen’s funeral in 2022.

Royal fans praised the couple for being ‘wonderful’ parents after the ten-year-old heir to the throne and his eight-year-old sister behaved impeccably throughout the historic event on Monday.

George and Charlotte cut solemn figures as they joined royals for Her Majesty’s funeral at Westminster Abbey and her Committal Service in Windsor, where Charlotte was seen giving her older brother a lesson in royal protocol as she told him ‘to bow’.

Meanwhile William and Kate’s youngest child, Prince Louis, five, did not attend the funeral as he was likely considered too young.

Speaking to FEMAIL, parenting expert Stephanie Wallis explained how the Princess of Wales took a more ‘dominant parenting role’, leaving Prince William to focus on his position as a son, grandson, and heir to the throne.

She said the couple had used ‘gentle touches’ to interact with their children and guide them through the day, as well as informing the youngsters they were there for support.

‘William and Kate interact like loving and caring parents, parents whose every move is under great scrutiny as are their children’s,’ Stephanie explained.

‘As parents we wish to protect our children as much as we can from situations in life control is limited when you are a part of the royal family, you have to work very carefully on your public interactions.

‘Kate seemed to take the more dominant parenting role at the funeral, staying closer to the children and giving them gentle directions when needed.

This allowed William to be fully focused on his role, not only as a father but as a son, a grandson and of course his dutifully role as Prince.’

She continued: ‘Both parents remained calm and natural, both in their own behaviours but also towards their children.

‘There were no forced interactions with their children and they gracefully took everything in their stride.

‘You got a real sense that they beautifully managed the fine balance between being present at the funeral in a personal capacity with their children and in their professional capacity as well.’

Stephanie, who is Founder of Safe and Sound Childcare Events, continued: ‘They are definitely hands on, something that they both will have been very keen to do.

‘They take great interest in their children’s upbringing, showing they are a real hands-on family with ‘family’ being at the very heart of their values as a married couple.

‘Kate and William have shown us many times before how they also enjoy lots of fun times with their children and we’ve seen them really connecting with their children through fun playful behaviours which acts as wonderful bonding moments as a family.

‘Kate and William are also wonderful leaders as parents, consistently teaching and guiding their children, exploring the world, new cultures, new hobbies with them, encouraging their children to adopt a can-do attitude.’
