The event, hosted by New York Attorney General Letitia James alongside other Democratic state attorneys general, focused on protecting vulnerable communities amid ongoing political challenges. Cory’s words, spoken with remarkable poise for his age, highlighted the real-world impacts of cuts to social programs, earning him a standing ovation and widespread acclaim on social media.
The town hall, held recently in New York City, brought together community members, legal experts, and officials to discuss strategies for safeguarding civil rights, healthcare, and social services in the face of potential federal rollbacks. Cory, a fourth-grader at Yonkers Montessori Academy, stepped up to the microphone to represent “the youth,” emphasizing how current political decisions could shape the futures of young people like himself.
In his speech, Cory introduced himself confidently: “My name is Cory Skipper Miller. I am nine years old and a fourth grader at Yonkers Montessori Academy.” He then dove into the heart of his message, stating, “I wanted to represent the youth because what’s happening now could change our futures. And what President Trump is doing and is threatening to do is frightening.”
Cory didn’t shy away from calling out specific concerns. He referenced Trump’s past comments, saying, “Parents and teachers are talking about a lot of things that we don’t know about. But unlike some people, we know the meaning of the Declaration of Independence. Come on, we all saw the video talking about low IQ.” This appeared to allude to Trump’s history of derogatory remarks toward Black and brown leaders and communities, including calling certain individuals “low IQ” in public statements.c7dcc3 Critics have long accused Trump of using such language to demean minorities, seniors, and veterans—groups Cory explicitly defended in his address.
Bringing the issue home, Cory shared personal stories about his family. “All jokes aside, my mom is oxygen dependent as she has been for more than five years due to COVID pneumonia in both lungs since March of 2020. And without social security, my grandmother, who is turning 98 years old on 15th May, would not be able to survive.” He continued, “My brother Kyle, when he becomes a veteran, he is entitled to veteran benefits. He wouldn’t be able to survive. Cuts to Social Security, cuts to veteran benefits, and cuts to education hurt my brother, me, my mother, my grandmother.”
The young speaker concluded with a direct plea to the panel, particularly addressing Attorney General Letitia James, whom he affectionately called “Miss Tish”: “So I’m asking you, you, and especially you, Miss Tish—what can you do to help me? I know you’re all lawyers, right?”
The audience erupted in applause, with many rising to their feet in a standing ovation. Videos of the moment quickly went viral on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, amassing hundreds of thousands of views.4acb92 One popular post described Cory as a “warrior” who “dismantled Trump’s attacks on Black and brown communities, our seniors, & those who served,” praising his “courage, fire, & moral clarity.”959a72 Another user called it a “mic drop moment,” noting that Cory’s speech channeled the spirit of civil rights icons like Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, and Rosa Parks.c1df49
Reactions poured in from across the political spectrum. Supporters hailed Cory as a symbol of hope, with one X user writing, “Listen to how articulate he is compared to our current president and politicians. We need a new government.”776314 Even those critical of the event’s Democratic leanings acknowledged the boy’s eloquence, though some dismissed it as scripted. However, eyewitness accounts and videos confirm Cory spoke from prepared notes but with genuine passion.
Attorney General James responded powerfully to the broader concerns raised at the town hall, including Cory’s. In a statement that drew thunderous applause, she declared, “We’re all in this together … We’re ready, we’re prepared. Do not give into fear … This is not the time to be afraid, this is the time to stand up and fight back … We will not give in, not give up. We will not capitulate. We will not bow. We will not bend. We. Will. Survive.”eb71ec
Cory’s speech comes at a time of heightened national debate over social safety nets, with Trump’s allies proposing significant reforms to programs like Social Security, Medicare, and veteran services. Advocates argue these changes disproportionately affect Black and brown communities, the elderly, and military families—precisely the groups Cory championed.
As the video continues to circulate, Cory Skipper Miller has become an unlikely icon for youth activism. His words serve as a reminder that the voices of the next generation are not only listening but ready to lead. In a divided nation, this 9-year-old’s call for justice and protection resonates as a beacon of unfiltered truth.
