President Donald Trump said he would accept the results of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections only if he believes they are “honest,” reiterating claims of election corruption during a Wednesday interview with NBC News. His remarks have drawn attention because they challenge traditional norms of accepting election outcomes and raise questions about federal involvement in state-run elections. In the interview with NBC’s Tom Llamas, Trump said, “I will, if the elections are honest,” when asked whether he would accept results if Republicans lose control of Congress.
He added that if elections are not conducted properly, “something else has to happen.”
Trump also denied advocating for “nationalizing” elections, despite previous comments on a podcast about Republicans “taking over the voting” in certain cities. He cited Detroit, Philadelphia, and Atlanta as examples of what he called “extremely corrupt” systems, without providing evidence.
The statements have renewed debate over state versus federal control of elections. U.S. law primarily assigns election administration to the states, with limited federal oversight.
Democrats and voting rights advocates criticized Trump’s comments, while the White House said he was referring to support for the SAVE Act and voter ID measures.
